Isla Negra — Pablo Neruda's Most Beautiful House

Isla Negra is neither an island nor black — it is a small coastal village 100 km southwest of Santiago, named after a dark rock on the beach. Here, Pablo Neruda built his favorite house: an enchanted, ship-shaped building right by the sea, taking his obsessive collecting passion to the extreme.

The house in Isla Negra is the largest and most impressive of the three Neruda museums: figureheads stand at the windows gazing at the sea, bottles of all colors fill the window frames, ship models, African masks, shells, insects, and antique maps fill every corner. Neruda designed the house like a ship — with a narrow bow, long deck, and a dining room with a sea view, styled like a captain's cabin.

In the garden, right by the sea, Neruda and Matilde are buried — his grave is a pilgrimage site for literature lovers from around the world.

The Village

Isla Negra itself is a sleepy coastal village with craft markets (Lapis Lazuli — Chile's national stone!), restaurants with sea views, and a quiet beach. The Lapis Lazuli Market in front of the Neruda house is the best place to buy this deep blue stone, found only in Chile and Afghanistan.

💡 Tipp

Isla Negra can be perfectly combined with the Casablanca Valley and Valparaíso for a day trip: wine tasting in Casablanca in the morning, lunch in Valparaíso, and Isla Negra in the afternoon. Easiest with a rental car, but also accessible by bus from Santiago (Pullman Bus, 2h).
