City Tour: Santiago Centro

Duration: 4–5 hours | Distance: approx. 6 km | Best time: Mornings from 9:00 AM

1. Metro Bellas Artes (Start)
Start at the Museo de Bellas Artes — the magnificent Beaux-Arts building from 1910 is worth a visit inside (free entry). Opposite lies Parque Forestal, Santiago's green promenade along the Río Mapocho.

2. Barrio Lastarria
Stroll through Calle José Victorino Lastarria: bookstores, cafés, galleries. Coffee break at Café Colmado (Flat White 3,200 CLP). Check out the antiques market at Plaza Mulato Gil de Castro.

3. Cerro Santa Lucía
Climb the founding hill of Santiago (15 min.). At the top: panoramic views over the city. Free of charge.

4. Plaza de Armas
Continue through the historic center to Plaza de Armas. Visit the cathedral, watch street performers, visit the Museo Histórico Nacional (free). Chess players in the park.

5. Mercado Central
North of the plaza to Mercado Central. At the outer stalls, eat fresh ceviche or a Paila Marina (6,000–10,000 CLP). Avoid the inner restaurants — touristy and overpriced.

6. La Vega Central
Cross the bridge to Recoleta to the real people's market. Stroll through the chaotic aisles, try exotic fruits (Chirimoya!), have lunch in the Cocinerías for under 4,000 CLP.

7. Patronato (Barrio Chino)
Right next to La Vega is Santiago's Korean-Chinese district. Affordable Asian restaurants, fabric stores, multicultural hustle and bustle.

8. La Moneda
Back across the river to the Palacio de La Moneda. Visit the neoclassical courtyard (free to pass through). Underground: Centro Cultural La Moneda with changing exhibitions (free to 3,000 CLP).

9. Barrio Bellavista & La Chascona
By metro or on foot to Bellavista. Visit La Chascona (Neruda's house, 8,000 CLP). Stroll through the colorful street art alleys.

10. Cerro San Cristóbal (Finale)
Ride the Funicular to the summit (3,500 CLP). Sunset over Santiago with Andes view. Afterwards: dinner in Bellavista — Pisco Sour at Liguria or Galindo.

💡 Tipp

This tour works best from Tuesday to Saturday (many museums are closed on Sundays, La Vega is quieter on Mondays). Start early, as Cerro San Cristóbal at sunset is the perfect finale. Wear comfortable shoes — it's uphill and downhill!
