Walking Tour: Valparaíso Street Art

Duration: 3–4 hours | Distance: approx. 4 km | Difficulty: Medium (many stairs!) | Best time: Mornings, 9:00–10:00 AM start

1. Plaza Sotomayor (Start)
Start at the central square with the Monumento a los Héroes de Iquique. Here lies the magnificent Comandancia en Jefe de la Armada (Naval Headquarters). From here, the Ascensor El Peral (1902, 100 CLP!) ascends to Cerro Alegre.

2. Cerro Alegre — Paseo Yugoslavo
At the top: Paseo Yugoslavo offers the first spectacular view over the bay. Here is also the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valparaíso (Palacio Baburizza, free entry). The surrounding streets are full of murals.

3. Templeman & Papudo
The two streets are the street art hotspots of Cerro Alegre: Huge murals covering entire house facades — from political statements to surreal fantasy worlds to hyper-realistic portraits. Internationally renowned artists like INTI, Un Kolor Distinto, and Charquipunk work here.

4. Cerro Concepción
Transition to the neighboring hill: English-German colony with Victorian houses, the Anglican St. Paul's Church, and cafés with European flair. The Calle Almirante Montt and Paseo Gervasoni offer more art and viewpoints.

5. Ascensor Concepción
The oldest elevator in Valparaíso (1883!). Ride down for free to the Plan (lower city) and admire the Victorian mechanism.

6. Museo a Cielo Abierto (Cerro Polanco)
The open-air museum: 20 large-format murals by renowned Chilean artists on house walls along a marked circular route. Free of charge.

7. La Sebastiana (optional detour)
Pablo Neruda's third house high on Cerro Bellavista. Five winding floors full of curiosities, panoramic views over the harbor. 8,000 CLP.

8. Caleta Portales (End)
To finish: Eat fresh fish in one of the Caleta restaurants at the fishing harbor. Ceviche de Reineta for 5,000 CLP, Paila Marina for 7,000 CLP. Fish sellers, pelicans, and sea lions for entertainment.

Achtung

Valparaíso, besides its beauty, also has rough edges: pickpocketing is a problem in certain Cerros and in the Plan (lower city). Stick to the tourist Cerros (Alegre, Concepción, Polanco), keep valuables close to your body, and avoid walking alone through secluded alleys at night. During the day on the tourist routes, it is safe.
