Car Rental in the Lake District

The lake district is the best region in Chile for a rental car: The roads are well-paved, the distances moderate, and the landscape is best enjoyed at your own pace. Rent from Temuco or Puerto Montt (return in another city often possible). Compact SUV from 35,000 CLP/day.

Weather & Clothing

The lake district has lots of rain — even in summer! A rain jacket and waterproof shoes are a must. The temperature varies greatly: Cool in the morning (8–12°C), pleasant during the day (18–25°C in summer), fresh in the evening. Layering principle!

Best Travel Time

  • December–February: High season, best weather (but never guaranteed!), all activities possible. Volcano ascents most likely
  • March–May: Autumn — fewer tourists, golden foliage, piñon harvest. Rain increases
  • June–September: Skiing on the volcanoes (Osorno, Villarrica, Pucón). Termas especially atmospheric in winter
  • October–November: Spring — blooming season, few tourists, hiking trails open after winter

Achtung

Villarrica Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Chile — CONAF closes the summit during increased activity. Check the current status before booking an ascent (SERNAGEOMIN website or directly with agencies in Pucón). Other volcanoes in the region can also become active — Calbuco erupted in 2015 without warning.
