Valdivia — The River City★★€€
Valdivia — Beer, Rivers, and History
Valdivia (170,000 inhabitants) is located at the confluence of the Río Calle-Calle, Río Valdivia, and Río Cau-Cau — a city defined by water. Founded in 1552 by Pedro de Valdivia, it was heavily influenced by German immigrants from 1850 onwards: breweries, half-timbered houses, bakeries, and a culinary culture reminiscent of southern Germany. Valdivia is Chile's unofficial beer capital.
The city was devastated in 1960 by the strongest earthquake ever recorded (9.5 on the Richter scale) — parts of the city sank into the river, and a tsunami caused damage as far as Japan. The Museo de la Exploración R.A. Philippi at the Universidad Austral tells this and the entire natural history of the region.
Highlights
- Feria Fluvial (River Market): Valdivia's famous market on the riverbank — fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, cheese, and seafood. The stars of the market are the sea lions waiting for fish scraps under the stalls. Most lively in the morning
- Cervecería Kunstmann: Chile's most famous brewery, founded by German immigrants. Brewery tour with tasting (12,000 CLP), huge beer garden, restaurant with pork knuckle and sauerkraut. 15 min. outside the center
- Isla Teja: The river island hosts the Universidad Austral, the Botanical Garden, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. Accessible by bridge
- Forts of Niebla and Corral: Spanish fortresses from the 17th century at the river mouth, 18 km west. The boat trip there (1h, 8,000 CLP) leads through the picturesque Río Valdivia with eagles and cormorants
- Santuario de la Naturaleza Carlos Anwandter: Wetland with over 100 bird species — kayak and boat tours through the flooded forests. Half-day from 20,000 CLP

Valdivia is the perfect stopover between Pucón and Puerto Varas. The Kunstmann Brewery and the river market alone are worth a stop. In February, the "Noche Valdiviana" takes place — a spectacular fireworks and boat festival on the Río Valdivia, attracting tens of thousands.
