Best Travel Time & Climate
Chile's extreme length of 4,300 km means that there is no uniform climate. The seasons are reversed compared to Europe: summer is from December to February, winter from June to August.
Best Time by Region
- Santiago & Central Chile: September–November (spring) and March–May (autumn). Summer (Dec–Feb) is hot and dry (30–35°C), winter mild with rain.
- Atacama: Possible all year round! 300+ sunny days. Daytime 20–30°C, cold at night (0–5°C). In July/August, it can freeze at high altitudes. The Milky Way is spectacular all year round.
- Patagonia & Torres del Paine: November–March (summer). The only sensible time — in winter, trails are closed, accommodations shut down. But even in summer: wind, rain, and sun in one day. December–February is peak season.
- Lake District: December–March for hiking and volcano climbing. June–September for skiing (yes, Chile has top-notch ski resorts!).

💡 Tipp
For a Chile tour from north to south, the Chilean summer (December–February) is the best time — then all regions are accessible. Those who want Patagonia with less wind and crowds should travel in November or March (shoulder season). The Atacama is a dream all year round.
