Climate & Best Travel Time
Thanks to its geographical diversity, France has several climate zones — the best travel time strongly depends on where you want to go.
Climate Zones
- Oceanic (Brittany, Normandy, Northern France) — mild winters, cool summers, frequent rain. Temperatures: 5–8 °C in winter, 18–22 °C in summer. Best time: June–September
- Continental (Alsace, Burgundy, Central France) — cold winters, warm summers, significant temperature differences. Temperatures: -2 to 4 °C in winter, 24–30 °C in summer. Best time: May–October
- Mediterranean (Provence, Côte d'Azur, Languedoc, Corsica) — mild winters, hot dry summers, lots of sun (2,800+ hours/year). Temperatures: 8–12 °C in winter, 28–35 °C in summer. Best time: April–June & September–October
- Mountain (Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central) — snowy winters, mild summers. Ski season: December–April. Hiking season: June–September
When to Go Where?
- Paris — appealing year-round. Most pleasant: April–June and September–October. July/August: hot, some restaurants on vacation
- Côte d'Azur — peak season July/August (crowded, hot, expensive). Ideal: May–June and September
- Provence — Lavender bloom: mid-June to mid-August (Valensole plateau). Optimal: May–October
- Loire Castles — April–October. Blooming gardens in spring, grape harvest in autumn
- Skiing — December–April (Alps), December–March (Pyrenees)
Achtung
In July and August, the French themselves are on vacation — coastal towns and the south are then crowded, prices peak, and motorways are congested (especially on the first and last weekend of August — "chassé-croisé"). If possible, travel in June or September.
