The Most Beautiful Waterfall in Iceland?

The Dynjandi (also called Fjallfoss) is considered by many to be the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland — and it is so remote that only a few visitors get to see it. It plunges down a 100-meter-high, fan-shaped cascade down a mountainside, spreading out from the top (30 meters wide) to the bottom (60 meters wide) — like a gigantic bridal veil of water.

The name Dynjandi means "the Thunderous," and from afar, you hear the roar before you see the waterfall. When you round the last curve of the fjord road and the Dynjandi suddenly appears before you — this mix of surprise and awe is indescribable.

The ascent to the Dynjandi passes by six smaller waterfalls (each with its own name: Háifoss, Úðafoss, Göngufoss, Hundafoss, Strompgljúfrafoss, Bæjarfoss), creating a waterfall ensemble that is unique. The path is steep but well-marked (20–30 min. to the top). Once at the top, you stand next to the upper edge and look out over the fjord — breathtaking.

💡 Tipp

Visit the Dynjandi in the morning — the sun is optimal then and illuminates the cascade. The campsite at the foot of the waterfall (free, only toilet) is one of the most spectacular campsites in Iceland — you sleep with the roar of the waterfall in your ears and the view of the fjord.
