Veneto: Padua, Vicenza & Prosecco Hills
Padua (Padova) ★★
Only 30 minutes from Venice, but a tenth as touristy. The Cappella degli Scrovegni (14 €, reservation required!) with Giotto's fresco cycle (1303–1305) is a key work of Western art — the first time figures show emotions. The Basilica di Sant'Antonio is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world. The Prato della Valle is one of the largest squares in Europe.
Vicenza ★★
The city of Andrea Palladio: UNESCO World Heritage thanks to 23 buildings by the Renaissance architect who influenced all Western architecture (from the White House to Buckingham Palace). The Villa Rotonda (5 km outside, 10 €) is his masterpiece — perfect symmetry on a hill. The Teatro Olimpico (11 €) is the oldest covered theater in Europe (1585).
Prosecco Hills (Conegliano-Valdobbiadene) ★★
The UNESCO-protected hills northwest of Venice produce Italy's best Prosecco. The Strada del Prosecco leads over 50 km through vineyards with tastings at every corner (from 5–15 €). The difference between industrial and artisanal Prosecco is a revelation here. Best time: September–October (harvest).
