Conservancies vs. Main Reserve
A crucial tip for the Masai Mara: Besides the main reserve, there are several private conservancies operated jointly by Masai communities and safari providers. They surround the main reserve and often offer a better experience.
Main Reserve (Masai Mara National Reserve)
- Advantages: Mara River with migration crossings, highest animal density, cheaper (many budget options)
- Disadvantages: Crowded in high season — up to 40 vehicles around a lion pride. Strict rules (no night drives, no walking safaris, stay on tracks)
Conservancies (Olare Motorogi, Mara Naboisho, Mara North, Ol Kinyei)
- Advantages: Limited vehicle numbers (exclusive experience!), night drives allowed, walking safaris with Masai guides, off-road driving possible, Masai communities benefit directly
- Disadvantages: More expensive (mostly luxury lodges), not directly on the Mara River for crossings (but day trips to the main reserve possible)
Recommendation
The perfect combination: 2 nights in a conservancy (exclusive game drives, walking safari, night drive) + 1–2 nights in the main reserve (migration at the Mara River). This way, you get the best of both worlds.
Conservancy Overview
| Conservancy | Size | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Olare Motorogi | 350 km² | Most exclusive, only 14 camps, leopard hotspot |
| Mara Naboisho | 500 km² | Largest conservancy, very good lion and elephant sightings |
| Mara North | 300 km² | Borders directly on the Mara River, crossing access |
| Ol Kinyei | 70 km² | Small and exclusive, only 2 camps, insider tip |
💡 Tipp
The conservancies are the insider tip for safari connoisseurs: walking safaris with Masai warriors at dawn, night drives with red-light spotlights (leopards!), and game drives without other vehicles in sight. Priceless.
