The Great Migration — Wildebeest Migration★★★

The greatest wildlife spectacle on earth: Over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebras, and 200,000 Thomson's gazelles follow an endless circular movement chasing the rain and fresh grass between the Serengeti (Tanzania) and the Masai Mara (Kenya).

The Mara River Crossings

The highlight of the entire migration: Tens of thousands of wildebeest plunge down the steep banks of the Mara River, swim through the rushing, crocodile-infested waters, and struggle up the other side — under the watchful eyes of hungry crocodiles and waiting lions. It is brutal, dramatic, and absolutely unforgettable.

The crossings are unpredictable — the herds can stand at the banks for hours before a brave wildebeest makes the first move. Then chaos breaks out. Your guide will know the best spots, but patience is essential.

💡 Tipp

August and September offer the best chances for river crossings. Plan at least 3 nights in the Mara — the crossings do not happen on command. The more time, the higher the chance to witness this natural wonder.
