Festivals & Traditions
Croatia has a vibrant festival culture—from medieval knight tournaments to modern music festivals:
Rijeka Carnival (January/February)
The largest carnival in Croatia and one of the largest in Europe. Up to 100,000 visitors experience parades, masks, and the famous Zvončari—men in sheepskins with giant bells driving away winter (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage).
Sinjska Alka (August)
A medieval knight tournament in Sinj (near Split), continuously held since 1715—UNESCO-protected since 2010. Riders in historical costumes gallop with lances at an iron ring (Alka). The tournament commemorates the victory over the Ottomans in 1715.
Klapa Singing
Dalmatia's soul in music: Klapa is an a cappella male singing (sometimes mixed), originating from the church choirs of coastal towns. Multi-voiced, melancholic, beautiful. UNESCO-protected since 2012. In Split, Omiš, and on the islands, you can often experience Klapa groups live in the evenings—especially at the Festival dalmatinskih klapa in Omiš (July).
Dubrovnik Summer Festival (July/August)
Since 1950, Dubrovnik's old town transforms into an open-air stage: theater, music, and dance at historical venues like the Lovrijenac Fort and the Rector's Palace. Croatia's most important cultural festival.
Spancirfest Varazdin (August)
Street performers, music, and culture in the baroque old town of Varaždin—a ten-day festival that turns the city into one big open-air celebration.
