Nature & Environment
Geography
Croatia has the shape of a horseshoe (or boomerang) — an unusual geography shaped by history. The country stretches from the Pannonian Plain in the northeast over the Dinaric Mountains to the 1,778 km long Adriatic coast.
Three Landscape Zones
- Pannonian Plain (Northeast): Flat, fertile, agricultural. Slavonia with its wheat fields, forests, and rivers (Drava, Sava, Danube). Croatia's "breadbasket".
- Dinaric Mountains (Center): Karst landscape — porous limestone, underground rivers, caves, gorges. The Plitvice Lakes and Krka Waterfalls are products of this karst. Highest mountain: Dinara (1,831 m).
- Adriatic Coast (West/South): 1,778 km mainland coast + 4,058 km island coast = 5,835 km total coast. 1,244 islands, reefs, and rocks. The water is extremely clear (up to 50 m visibility) because the karst filters sediments.
Islands
Of the 1,244 islands, only 47 are permanently inhabited. The largest: Krk and Cres (both about 406 km²), Brač (395 km²), Hvar (300 km²). The most populous: Krk (19,000 inhabitants, connected to the mainland by a bridge). The most remote inhabited: Vis (opened to tourists only in 1989, previously a Yugoslav military base).
Climate
The coast has a Mediterranean climate (hot, dry summers; mild, wet winters). The inland has a continental climate (cold winters with snow, hot summers). The Bora (Bura) is a cold, gusty northeast wind that whistles through the coastal valleys in winter at up to 250 km/h — the Pelješac Bridge and the Krk Bridge are then closed.
National Parks & Nature Parks
Croatia has 8 national parks and 11 nature parks — a remarkable density for such a small country.

Less strictly protected than national parks, but also worth seeing:
- Biokovo — Steep mountains above the Makarska Riviera with Skywalk (12€)
- Telašćica — Natural harbor on Dugi Otok, salt lake, cliffs
- Vransko jezero — Largest natural lake in Croatia, bird watching
- Lastovo — Remote island group, stargazing paradise (hardly any light pollution)
- Žumberak-Samoborsko gorje — Gentle hills near Zagreb, ideal for day hikes
- Medvednica — Zagreb's home mountain with Medvedgrad castle
- Papuk — UNESCO Global Geopark in Slavonia
- Lonjsko Polje — Swamp area on the Sava, storks, wooden architecture
- Kopački rit — Danube wetlands near Osijek, one of Europe's largest wetlands
- Učka — Mountain massif above Opatija with observation tower
- Dinara — Croatia's highest mountain (1,831 m), became a nature park in 2021
Tipp
Tickets for Plitvice Lakes MUST be booked online in advance (especially June-September). Daily limit: 10,000 visitors. Arrive either very early (8 AM entrance 1) or in the afternoon from 3 PM for sunset light.
Wildlife
Croatia's wildlife is surprisingly diverse:
On Land
- Brown Bears: About 1,000 specimens in the Dinarides. Gorski Kotar and the forests around the Plitvice Lakes are their main habitat. Sightings are rare — bears avoid humans.
- Lynxes: About 40-60 Eurasian lynxes, strictly protected. Risnjak (name means "Lynx Place") is their main habitat.
- Wolves: About 200 in the mountains. Strictly protected since 1995.
- Griffon Vultures: One of the last colonies in Europe on the island of Cres. The rescue center in Beli takes care of injured animals. Wingspan up to 2.8 m!
In the Sea
- Dolphins: The bottlenose dolphin population around Lošinj is one of the best-studied in the world. Dolphin-watching tours from Mali Lošinj (Blue World Institute). About 180 animals.
- Monk Seals: Extremely rare, but there are occasional sightings in remote caves.
- Loggerhead Turtles: Nest on some beaches. Risk of injury from boats and nets.
Beware: Sea Urchins!
Black sea urchins (Diadema) inhabit almost all rocky and pebble beaches. Their spines break off in the skin and are excruciatingly painful. Water shoes are therefore not a fashion faux pas on the Croatian coast but a necessity!
Achtung
Sea urchins are found on almost all rocky beaches in Croatia. ALWAYS wear water shoes in the water! If you do step on one: Do NOT remove the spines yourself — apply olive oil or vinegar and see a doctor.
Environmental Protection & Sustainable Travel
Croatia boasts excellent water quality (regularly ranked No. 1 in the EU) and impressive natural treasures. On the other hand, the country struggles with typical problems of mass tourism:
- Overtourism: Since 2019, Dubrovnik limits the number of cruise passengers to 4,000 per day (previously up to 10,000). Hvar Town and Split also reach their capacity limits in July/August.
- Water Scarcity: On the islands, drinking water is brought by pipeline or tanker. Saving water is not a request but a necessity.
- Waste: Especially on remote islands, a problem — plastic waste on beaches is unfortunately common.
- Construction Sins: Illegal construction projects on the coast (apartmentization) threaten the landscape.
What You Can Do
- Travel in the off-season (May/June, September/October) — better weather, fewer crowds, lower prices
- Choose local konobas over chains — your money stays in the community
- Bring a water bottle — tap water is drinkable everywhere
- Use public transport/ferries instead of rental cars, where possible
- Visit less-known places — Šibenik instead of Dubrovnik, Vis instead of Hvar, Nin instead of Zadar
