De Pijp & Albert Cuyp Market★★
De Pijp is Amsterdam's most multicultural and vibrant district — the city's "Quartier Latin." Here, Surinamese roti shops, Turkish bakeries, trendy wine bars, and traditional Bruin Cafés mix. The population is more diverse than anywhere else in the Netherlands.
Albert Cuyp Market
The Albert Cuyp Market is the largest street market in the Netherlands with over 250 stalls — a feast for all senses. From Monday to Saturday (9 am–5 pm), stalls with fresh fish, cheese, fruit, clothing, fabrics, and street food line up. The specialties:
- Fresh Stroopwafels — Warm from the iron, with caramel syrup. The stand in the middle of the market is the best.
- Dutch Herring (Haring) — The traditional way: raw, with onions and pickles, hold the fish by the tail and take a bite.
- Kibbeling — Fried fish pieces with garlic sauce. The Dutch fast-food highlight.
- Surinamese Food — Roti, Broodjes Pom, Bakabana. De Pijp has the best Surinamese cuisine in Amsterdam.
After the market: The Gerard Douplein is the liveliest square — surrounded by terraces, perfect for a beer in the afternoon sun. The nearby Sarphatipark is the small, quiet brother of the Vondelpark.
