Lagos & Ponta da Piedade★★★

Lagos, Algarve

Lagos is the heart of the western Algarve — and the city that excites travelers the most. The combination of a historic Old Town (completely surrounded by city walls), spectacular beaches right on the doorstep, a vibrant nightlife, and a relaxed surfer atmosphere makes Lagos the perfect Algarve base camp. Here, backpackers meet families, surfers meet cultural travelers, and retirees meet digital nomads.

The Old Town of Lagos is a labyrinth of narrow streets with white houses, azulejo facades, and small squares inviting you to linger. At the Praça Infante Dom Henrique stands the statue of Henry the Navigator, who launched Portuguese exploration voyages from Lagos in the 15th century. The Igreja de Santo António (entry €3, including Museu Municipal) is completely covered inside with gilded woodwork — a baroque excess that leaves you speechless with its opulence. A dark chapter of history is shown at the Mercado de Escravos (Slave Market, entry €3) at Praça da República — the first slave market in Europe (1444), now a small museum of remembrance.

The beaches of Lagos are among the most beautiful in Europe. The Praia Dona Ana — framed by golden cliffs with grottos and arches — has been repeatedly awarded as one of the best beaches in the world. The neighboring Praia do Camilo is accessible via a steep wooden staircase (about 200 steps) and feels like a private beach between the rocks. Both are crowded in high season (July/August) — those seeking peace go to Meia Praia, a 4 km long sandy beach east of the city, or to the wild Praia da Luz (7 km west).

The absolute highlight is the Ponta da Piedade, a rock formation 3 km south of Lagos, which is one of the most spectacular coastal landscapes in Europe. Golden sandstone cliffs, natural rock arches, hidden grottos, turquoise water — the landscape seems unreal, like something from a fantasy film. From above (free, via a footpath from the lighthouse), you have a breathtaking view; even better is a boat tour (from €20, 1 hour) from Lagos harbor, which goes into the grottos and includes swimming stops in hidden coves. Best in the morning when the light makes the rocks glow golden.

The nightlife in Lagos is the liveliest in the Algarve — thanks to the large backpacker community. The Rua da Barreira and Rua 25 de Abril are lined with bars: The Three Monkeys (live music, cheap cocktails from €5), the Nah Nah Bah (rooftop bar with sunset vibes), and Whyte's (roof terrace with sea view) are the classics. The night starts around 10 PM and rarely ends before 4 AM.

💡 Tipp

Rent a kayak or SUP board at the beach (from €15/hour) and paddle yourself to Ponta da Piedade — you'll reach grottos too narrow for tourist boats. Best in the early morning when the water is mirror-smooth. Bring swimming shoes, the rocks are sharp.
