Beaches of the Algarve — Overview★★★

The Algarve has over 150 beaches along 200 km of coastline — and the choice can be overwhelming. The coast can be roughly divided into three zones: the Sotavento (East Algarve, Faro to Vila Real de Santo António) with flat sandy beaches and warm lagoons, the Barlavento (Central and West Algarve, Lagos to Albufeira) with the famous cliff beaches and grottos, and the Costa Vicentina (West Coast, Sagres to Aljezur) with wild surf beaches and untouched nature.

The 10 most beautiful beaches in the Algarve:

  • Praia da Marinha (Lagoa) — Limestone double arches, turquoise water, UNESCO-listed. Steep, but worth the descent. The classic.
  • Praia de Benagil (Lagoa) — Small beach next to the famous cave. Starting point for kayak tours.
  • Praia Dona Ana (Lagos) — Golden cliffs, grottos, within walking distance of Lagos. Perfect, but crowded in summer.
  • Praia do Camilo (Lagos) — 200 steps down into a rocky paradise. Intimate and photogenic.
  • Praia da Falésia (Albufeira) — 6 km of red sandstone cliffs. Endless, dramatic, space for everyone.
  • Praia de São Rafael (Albufeira) — Rock formations, clear water, ideal for snorkeling.
  • Praia da Ilha de Tavira (Tavira) — Island beach in the Ria Formosa, accessible by ferry. Quiet and unspoiled.
  • Praia do Barril (Tavira) — Access via a miniature train through the salt marshes. Anchor cemetery as a photo motif.
  • Praia da Arrifana (Aljezur) — Wild surf beach on the west coast with castle wall ruins on the cliff.
  • Praia do Amado (Carrapateira) — Consistently good waves, surf school, nature park feeling. The best surf beach in the Algarve.

Water temperature: The Atlantic water in the Algarve is cooler than many expect: In summer (July-September), it reaches 20-23°C on the south coast and only 17-19°C on the west coast. This is enough for most to swim, but those expecting warm bathwater will be disappointed. The Ria Formosa (lagoons near Faro/Tavira) is significantly warmer — up to 26°C in August.

Safety: The Algarve beaches have a flag system: Green (safe), Yellow (caution, strong current), Red (swimming prohibited), Checkered (beach temporarily unguarded). Especially on the west coast, there are dangerous rip currents — even when the sea looks calm. Never swim at unguarded beaches with a red flag, and if you get caught in a current: don't swim against it, but swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current.

Equipment: The Algarve beaches often have no natural shade. Sun umbrella and lounger cost €10-15/day for a set at managed beaches. Bringing your own equipment saves significantly in the long run. Water shoes are recommended at rocky beaches — the limestone rocks have sharp edges, and sea urchins are found in the rock pools.

💡 Tipp

The most beautiful beaches are crowded in July and August. September is the best bathing month: The water has reached its maximum temperature, the tourist crowds are gone, prices drop, and the sun still shines reliably. June is also excellent — slightly cooler water (19-21°C), but significantly fewer people.
