Practical Tips for Lisbon€
For Western European standards, Lisbon is affordable — significantly cheaper than Paris, London, or Barcelona, comparable to Madrid, and cheaper than Rome. A daily budget of 60-80€ per person (excluding accommodation) is enough for good food, admissions, and transport.
Transport: The Viva Viagem card (0.50€ deposit) is a must: A single trip on metro, bus, and tram costs 1.65€ instead of 3.00€. For frequent travelers, there is a 24-hour ticket for 6.80€ (metro/bus/tram) or 10.70€ (including ferries and trains to Cascais/Sintra). The metro has four lines and is clean, safe, and fast — the stations are adorned with azulejo art and are attractions in themselves. Uber works excellently and is cheaper than taxis: A ride from the airport to the center costs 8-12€.
Best travel time: April to June and September to October are ideal: 20-28°C, little rain, manageable tourist crowds. July and August are hot (up to 40°C) but lively — the Festas dos Santos Populares in June (especially the night of Santo António on June 12/13) turn the whole city into a giant street festival with sardines, wine, and dancing. Winter (November-February) is mild (10-16°C), rainy, but atmospheric — and prices drop by 30-50%.
Accommodation: Lisbon has accommodations for every budget: Hostels from 18€/night (the Yes! Lisbon in Alfama and the Home Lisbon Hostel in Baixa are excellent), boutique hotels from 80€/night (the Memmo Alfama has the best pool view in the city), and Airbnbs from 50€/night. The best neighborhoods to stay in: Alfama (atmospheric, central, but noisy due to Fado bars), Baixa/Chiado (central, good metro connection), Príncipe Real (trendy, quiet, a bit more expensive) and Graça (authentic, great views, affordable).
Safety: Lisbon is one of the safest capitals in Europe. Pickpocketing on tram 28, at Praça do Comércio, and in Bairro Alto at night is the only notable risk. Usual precautions are sufficient: carry valuables in front, don't hang handbags on the back of chairs in restaurants, avoid dark alleys in Alfama at night.
💡 Tipp
The Lisboa Card (€27/24h, €44/72h) is only worth it if you really visit many museums AND use public transport intensively. For most travelers, the Viva Viagem plus individual admissions is cheaper. Calculate beforehand!
