Prague has four distinct seasons — each with its own charm. From spring with blooming gardens to hot summers on the Vltava terraces and magical winters with Christmas markets.

Climate Overview

Prague has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The city is located in the Vltava valley and is therefore somewhat sheltered from the wind, but in winter it can become quite cold. The transitional seasons of spring and autumn are the most pleasant — and the best for a visit.

MonthTemperatureRainy DaysSunshine Hours
Jan–Feb-3 to 3°C5–72–3h
Mar–Apr3–15°C5–64–6h
May–Jun12–24°C7–87–8h
Jul–Aug15–27°C7–87–8h
Sep–Oct10–20°C5–65–6h
Nov–Dec0–6°C5–72–3h

Important: Prague's summers can become surprisingly hot — 30–35°C is not unusual in July and August. The winters, on the other hand, bring frost, occasional snow, and temperatures down to -10°C. But a snow-covered Prague with steaming Svařák (mulled wine) in hand is a magical experience.

The Four Seasons

Spring (April–May): The Ideal Travel Time

Prague in spring is unbeatable: 12–22°C, blooming gardens on Petřín Hill, the first beer gardens open, the days grow long, and the crowds are still manageable. The palace gardens of the Lesser Town and the fruit trees on Petřín transform the city into a sea of blossoms. From May, the Vltava terraces are also fully occupied.

Summer (June–August): Hot and Crowded

High season in Prague: 22–30°C (occasionally over 35°C), long days, open-air concerts, and crowded sights. The Charles Bridge is a mass of people from 9 AM, and the castle queues grow long. However: Vltava boat trips, beer gardens open until midnight, and Prague's famous nightlife in full swing. Tip: Get up early (Charles Bridge at sunrise!) and sit out the midday heat in a museum or a pivnice.

Autumn (September–October): Golden Autumn

The second-best travel time: pleasant 12–20°C, golden light, grape harvest (Burčák — the fresh young wine, only in September/October!), fewer tourists, and spectacular autumn colors in the parks. October is ideal for photography — the Vltava steams in the morning, and the castle silhouette stands in the golden mist.

Winter (November–March): Magical and Affordable

Prague's winter has a special charm: Christmas markets (from the end of November) on the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, snow-covered alleys, steaming Svařák (mulled wine), and Trdelník. Prices are at their lowest, and hotels are half-empty. The cold (-5 to +5°C) is more than compensated by the atmosphere. After New Year, it becomes quieter and very affordable, but also bare and gray.

Tipp

The absolute best time to visit is May or September: pleasant temperatures, manageable crowds, and the most beautiful light. In May, the gardens on Petřín are in bloom, and in September, Burčák (young wine) is available on every corner.
