Nightlife — From Beach Bars to Techno Clubs★★
The nightlife of the southwest coast has something for every taste — from the casual sunset session with live guitar to the pumping techno club where dancing goes on until 4 AM. The three places have distinctly different personalities: Seminyak is chic and cocktail-heavy, Canggu is laid-back and surfer-cool, Kuta is loud and beer-heavy.
In Seminyak, the evening begins in the beach clubs (Ku De Ta, Potato Head) and then moves to the bars and clubs of Jalan Petitenget and Jalan Kayu Aya. Motel Mexicola (Jalan Kayu Jati) is an institution: A colorful, over-the-top Mexico-themed restaurant that turns into a dance club from 10 PM — DJs, tequila shots, and an atmosphere that swings between carnival and Havana night. Cocktails from 120,000 IDR (~7€). Mirror Bali (Jalan Petitenget) is Bali's most exclusive club — a former church (yes, really) with gothic arches, chandeliers, and international DJ lineups. Entry from 200,000 IDR (~11.70€) including a drink.
In Canggu, the nightlife is more relaxed: Old Man's (Batu Bolong) is the inevitable go-to spot — live music, pub quiz on Wednesday, rooftop bar, and a scene of surfers, nomads, and backpackers who meet here every evening (Bintang 40,000 IDR/~2.30€, cocktails from 80,000 IDR/~4.70€). Sandbar on the same beach offers relaxed reggae vibes and cheap drinks. For those who prefer electronic music: Vault (formerly Pretty Poison) and Atlas Beach Club (Bali's largest beach club with pool, DJ, and party atmosphere) are the go-to spots for electronic music.
In Kuta, nightlife is concentrated on Jalan Legian and the adjacent side streets. Sky Garden is a six-story party house with different music genres on each floor — from the rooftop bar with views to the basement club. Entry from 100,000 IDR (~5.80€) including a drink. The atmosphere is young, loud, and predominantly Australian. Not everyone's cup of tea, but an authentic Bali experience of a different kind.
💡 Tipp
Alcohol is legal and widely available in Bali, but beware of Arak (Balinese palm liquor): Unscrupulous bars dilute it with methanol — tourists die from it every year. Drink Arak only in reputable bars and restaurants, never in the cheapest beach shack. If in doubt: Bintang beer or well-known spirits brands are always safe.
Achtung
Methanol poisoning from adulterated alcohol is a real danger in Bali. Symptoms: headache, vision disturbances, nausea — often appear 12–24 hours after consumption. If suspected, go to the hospital immediately (BIMC Hospital Kuta, 24/7). Never buy open spirits in plastic bottles from street vendors.
