Ubud & Central Bali

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali — a place where emerald green rice terraces cascade into misty ravines, the sounds of gamelan drift from temple courtyards, and the scent of incense and frangipani lingers in the humid air. Since the 1930s, when the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet founded an artist colony here, Ubud has attracted creatives, seekers, and adventurers from around the world. Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat Pray Love" turned the place into a global destination in 2006 — both a blessing and a curse. Yes, Jalan Monkey Forest is full of yoga studios and smoothie bowls. But step ten minutes out of the center, and you'll find yourself in a landscape that ranks among the most beautiful on earth: volcanoes on the horizon, farmers in ankle-deep water among the rice seedlings, ancient temples in jungle ravines. Ubud is not a place — it is a state of mind.
