Best Travel Time: Dry vs. Rainy Season

Bali has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons. The choice of travel time massively influences your experience — from prices to road conditions to visibility when diving.

The Two Seasons

  • Dry Season (April – October): The best travel time. Sunny, little rain, 27–30 °C, lower humidity. July/August is high season with the most tourists and highest prices. June and September are the sweet spots — good weather, fewer tourists.
  • Rainy Season (November – March): Daily tropical showers, usually in the afternoon for 1–3 hours. Often sunshine in between. Temperatures 28–33 °C with high humidity. Significantly lower prices (30–50% below high season), fewer tourists, lusher vegetation. January is the wettest month.

Festivals & Events

  • Nyepi (Day of Silence, March/April): Bali's most unique festival. The entire island comes to a standstill — no lights, no traffic, no noise for 24 hours. The night before, spectacular Ogoh-Ogoh parades with giant demon figures. Note: On Nyepi Day, no one is allowed to leave their hotel, including tourists. Airport closed!
  • Galungan & Kuningan (every 210 days): The most important Balinese festival. Penjor bamboo poles decorate every street, temples are festively adorned. For ten days, Balinese celebrate the victory of good over evil.
  • Bali Spirit Festival (March/April): A week-long yoga, dance, and music festival in Ubud. Internationally renowned.

💡 Tipp

The absolute sweet spots are June and September: dry season weather without high season prices and crowds. In July/August, the most popular accommodations in Ubud and Uluwatu are booked weeks in advance.

Achtung

On Nyepi Day (Day of Silence), Ngurah Rai Airport is completely closed for 24 hours. No flights, no leaving the accommodation. Do not plan your arrival or departure on this day!
