Amboise & Clos Lucé★★★

The royal castle of Amboise majestically overlooks the Loire and the charming old town. Charles VIII grew up here, who imported the Italian Renaissance to France in 1495. His successor Francis I spent his childhood in Amboise and invited the greatest mind of the Renaissance in 1516: Leonardo da Vinci.

The castle itself is smaller than Chambord or Chenonceau but steeped in history and atmospheric. The Gothic Chapel of Saint-Hubert houses the presumed tomb of Leonardo da Vinci — a simple but moving memorial. From the terrace, there is a grand view over the Loire and the rooftops of the town.

Château du Clos Lucé — Leonardo's Last Home★★★

2 Rue du Clos Lucé, 37400 Amboise
Täglich. Feb–Juni & Sept–Okt: 9–19 Uhr, Juli–Aug: 9–20 Uhr, Nov–Jan: 9–18 Uhr.
19€ (Erwachsene), 13,50€ (Kinder 7–18), unter 7 frei.

Only 500 meters from the royal castle lies the Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last three years (1516–1519). Francis I provided the 64-year-old genius with the elegant manor house, paid him a generous pension, and regularly visited him via an underground passage from the castle.

Today, Clos Lucé is a fascinating museum that brings Leonardo's life and work to life. In its rooms — including his bedroom and studio — his world is reconstructed. In the basement, there are 40 functional models of his inventions: helicopter, tank, swing bridge, parachute — all rebuilt from his notebooks and available for hands-on exploration.

In the 7-hectare park, there are more large-scale replicas of his machines, along with translucent reproductions of his paintings along a walking path. Equally fascinating for children and adults — one of the best museums in the entire Loire region.

💡 Tipp

Plan at least 2 hours, preferably 3 with the park. The combination of Château Amboise + Clos Lucé is the perfect half-day excursion. Buying both tickets together saves 3€ (combined ticket approx. 30€). Clos Lucé has an excellent restaurant "L'Auberge du Prieuré" with a terrace in the park (menu from 28€).

Royal Château Amboise★★

Montée de l'Emir Abd el Kader, 37400 Amboise
Täglich. April–Juni: 9–18:30 Uhr, Juli–Aug: 9–19 Uhr, Nov–Jan: 9–12:30 & 14–17 Uhr.
15,50€ (Erwachsene), 11€ (Studierende), 10€ (Kinder 7–18).

The castle offers a good overview of the history of the French monarchy from Charles VIII to Francis I. The rooms are more simply furnished compared to Chambord or Chenonceau, but the location above the Loire is breathtaking. The terrace and the hanging gardens offer one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the entire Loire Valley.

Particularly noteworthy: the Chapel of Saint-Hubert (1491–1496), a jewel of Flamboyant Gothic with a delicate relief above the portal depicting the hunting scene of Saint Hubert. Leonardo da Vinci is buried here — a memorial plaque and a simple grave commemorate the universal scholar.

In summer, the castle hosts the "Promenade Nocturne" performances — a historical spectacle with costumes and fireworks.

Old Town Amboise

Amboise is one of the prettiest small towns in the Loire Valley (approx. 14,000 inhabitants). The old town below the castle has winding alleys with half-timbered houses, art galleries, chocolatiers, and cozy restaurants. The market on Friday and Sunday at Place Michel-Debré is one of the best in the region — local goat cheese (Sainte-Maure de Touraine), rillettes from Tours, wines from Vouvray and Montlouis.

A promenade along the banks of the Loire invites you to stroll, with views of the Île d'Or and the castle. In the evening, the illumination of the castle above the town is particularly atmospheric.

Restaurant Tips: "Chez Bruno" (bistro, main course 14–22€, excellent Loire cuisine), "L'Épicerie" (modern French, menu from 35€), "Bigot" (patisserie since 1913, the best macarons in town, from 1.80€/piece).

💡 Tipp

Amboise is an excellent base for the Loire Valley: centrally located, good train connections (Paris-Austerlitz in 2 hours, TGV via Saint-Pierre-des-Corps in 1:15 hours), cozy and not overcrowded. Hotels from about 80€/night in the center.
