Loire Wine Region★★
The Loire Valley, with over 800 kilometers of vineyards, is the most diverse wine region in France. Everything is produced here: dry and sweet white wines, elegant red wines, rosés, and some of the best sparkling wines outside of Champagne. The tuffeau stone soils — the same limestone from which the castles were built — give the wines their distinctive minerality.
Vouvray★★
Vouvray is only 10 kilometers east of Tours and is the mecca of Chenin Blanc — a grape variety that reaches its highest expression here. The wines range from bone dry (sec) to semi-dry (demi-sec) to opulently sweet (moelleux) and pétillant (sparkling wine). The best Vouvray can age for decades.
Many wineries are located in troglodyte caves — cellars carved into the tuffeau rock, maintaining a constant 12°C year-round. These caves have been in use since the 11th century.
Recommended Wineries:
Domaine Huet — The most famous winery in Vouvray, biodynamically managed. Tasting of 5 wines from 10€. Visit by appointment. The single vineyards "Le Haut-Lieu," "Le Mont," and "Clos du Bourg" are among the greatest white wines in France.
Cave des Producteurs de Vouvray — Cooperative winery with 35 winemakers. Free tasting, excellent value for money (bottle from 7€). A good introduction to the region.
Domaine François Chidaine — Top biodynamic winemaker, also producing in Montlouis-sur-Loire. Tasting by appointment, very personal and educational.
💡 Tipp
The "Route Touristique du Vignoble" leads through all the important sites. Best by bike — the Tours–Vouvray route is flat and only 10 km. Many wineries offer spontaneous tastings (usually 5–15€ for 4–6 wines), but for the top estates (Huet, Chidaine), be sure to call ahead.
Chinon★★
Chinon is the most important red wine appellation of the Loire — here the Cabernet Franc reigns, which matures to an elegance and finesse on the Loire rarely achieved in Bordeaux. The best Chinon wines have aromas of red berries, violets, graphite, and the typical tuffeau mineral tone.
The town itself is enchanting: A medieval old town with half-timbered houses at the foot of a mighty castle ruin, where Joan of Arc met the Dauphin Charles VII in 1429 and convinced him to go to Reims for his coronation. The castle (11€) offers spectacular views over the Vienne Valley.
Wineries in Chinon:
Domaine Charles Joguet — Pioneer of quality winemaking in Chinon. Tasting from 8€. The single vineyards "Clos de la Dioterie" and "Chêne Vert" are legendary.
Caves Plouzeau — In the middle of the old town, in troglodyte cellars. Free tasting, charming atmosphere, good wines from 9€/bottle.
Market: Thursdays and Saturdays on Place Jeanne d'Arc — one of the most authentic markets in the Loire Valley with goat cheese, rillettes, and of course Chinon wine.
Sancerre★★
Sancerre is located at the eastern end of the Loire wine region and is world-famous for its Sauvignon Blanc — crisp, mineral, with aromas of gooseberry, flint, and citrus fruits. The medieval hilltop town sits on a 312-meter-high hill above the Loire and offers spectacular panoramic views over the vineyards and the valley.
The vineyards around Sancerre are divided into three soil types, each giving the wines a different character: Terres blanches (limestone marl, full, round wines), Caillottes (limestone, mineral and elegant), and Silex (flint, smoky and complex).
Less known but equally excellent: Sancerre Rouge from Pinot Noir — light, fruity, and perfect with goat cheese.
Crottin de Chavignol — the famous goat cheese of the region, produced in the neighboring village of Chavignol. The combination of Sancerre Blanc and Crottin de Chavignol is a classic French food pairing and worth the trip alone.
Recommended Wineries: Domaine Vacheron (biodynamic, tasting 12€), Domaine Henri Bourgeois (large estate, free tasting), Domaine Vincent Pinard (top winemaker, by appointment).
💡 Tipp
Sancerre is off the main castle route and is best reached by car (2 hours from Tours). The "Maison des Sancerre" (8€) offers an excellent overview of the wine region with an interactive exhibition and tasting of 3 wines included. Best time: September–October for the grape harvest.
