Best Travel Time & Cherry Blossom
Japan has four distinct seasons, each with its own charm. The choice of travel time significantly determines which Japan you experience:
The Four Seasons
- Spring (March – May): The best and most popular travel time. The cherry blossom (Sakura) moves from the end of March in Kyushu to mid-May in Hokkaido. Peak in Tokyo and Kyoto: Late March to mid-April. Temperatures 10–20 °C, little rain. Book hotels early during cherry blossom season!
- Summer (June – August): Hot and humid (30–35 °C). The rainy season (Tsuyu) lasts from mid-June to mid-July. August is peak season for Japanese (Obon festival). Good for Hokkaido (pleasant 25 °C) and climbing Fuji (July–Sept).
- Autumn (September – November): Fantastic autumn foliage (Kōyō) from October. Kyoto in November with red and golden maple is spectacular. Pleasant 15–25 °C. Typhoon season September/October to consider!
- Winter (December – February): Cold (0–10 °C in Tokyo), but clear and sunny. Few tourists, cheaper prices. Perfect for onsen, skiing in the Japanese Alps and Hokkaido, winter illuminations.
Cherry Blossom (Sakura) — The Highlight
The cherry blossom is Japan's most magical time. The bloom lasts only 7–10 days per region, and the Japanese follow the "Sakura Front" (cherry blossom forecast) like a weather report. Hanami (flower viewing) means picnicking under the cherry trees — with sake, bento, and friends.
| Region | Bloom Period | Best Spots |
|---|---|---|
| Kyushu (Fukuoka) | End of March | Maizuru Park |
| Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka) | End of March – Early April | Maruyama Park, Philosopher's Path |
| Tokyo | End of March – Early April | Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen, Meguro River |
| Tohoku | Mid – End of April | Hirosaki Park |
| Hokkaido | Early – Mid May | Matsumae, Hakodate |

💡 Tipp
The cherry blossom is unpredictable — plan flexible travel dates and watch the official Sakura forecast (sakura.weathermap.jp) from January. Book hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo 6 months in advance if traveling during cherry blossom season.
Achtung
The typhoon season runs from August to October. Typhoons can disrupt flights, trains, and ferries for days. Travel insurance with trip cancellation is particularly important during this time.
