Balos — The Turquoise Lagoon★★★

The Lagoon of Balos (Μπάλος) is Crete's most famous beach — and one of the most beautiful in the world. At the northwestern tip of the Gramvousa Peninsula lies this shallow, turquoise-blue lagoon, which seems to have sprung from a dream: white, partly pink shimmering sand, ankle-deep warm water in unreal shades of blue and green, and behind it the wild rocky backdrop of the uninhabited peninsula.

Arrival by boat: The most popular option: excursion boats depart daily from the port of Kissamos (approx. €25 round trip, 1-hour journey) with a stop at the fortress island of Gramvousa. There you can climb the Venetian fortress (1579) — the view from above of Balos is breathtaking. The boats depart around 10:30 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m.

Arrival by car: From Kissamos on an unpaved gravel road (approx. 10 km, 30–40 minutes, drive slowly!) to the parking lot. From there a steep descent on foot (20–30 minutes downhill, return is strenuous!). The effort is worth it: from the viewpoint, you have the famous panorama that adorns every Crete postcard. Note: The gravel road is doable for normal rental cars, but drive slowly. Some rental companies prohibit it (check insurance!).

The lagoon is very shallow (ideal for children!), the water crystal clear and incredibly warm. There is no shade — bring a sunshade or tent! Sun loungers can be rented on-site (8–10€). There is a small beach bar. In high season (July/August), it can get crowded — come early!

💡 Tipp

Come by boat and bring snorkeling gear — the water around Gramvousa is crystal clear. Or come by car and start the descent at 8 a.m. before the boats arrive. Bring enough water — there is little shade and the climb back is sweaty!
