Elafonisi — The Pink Beach★★★
Elafonisi (Ελαφονήσι, "Deer Island") is Crete's second dream beach and a nature reserve of unreal beauty. At the southwestern tip of the island lies a shallow lagoon, connected to a small island that can be waded through at low tide. What makes Elafonisi unique: The sand shimmers in many places in a delicate pink — caused by crushed shells of foraminifera (single-celled organisms with calcareous shells).
The water is shallow, warm, and absolutely safe — perfect for families with small children. The colors change with the light between turquoise, emerald green, and deep blue. On the offshore island (which is actually a peninsula), you will find wild dune landscapes, secluded coves, rare plants, and absolute tranquility if you walk a few hundred meters from the main beach.
Arrival: Elafonisi is 75 km southwest of Chania — the drive over the mountain road through the Topolia Gorge is spectacular (tight curves, but paved). From Chania approx. 1.5 hours. There are also KTEL buses (May–October, 1× daily). Parking available (3€). On-site: sun loungers (8€), small snack bar, but no major infrastructure — bring water and food!
Elafonisi has been designated a Natura 2000 reserve since 2001 — rare animal species such as the Mediterranean sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and rare plant species live here. Please do not take shells or sand!
Achtung
Elafonisi is extremely crowded in high season (July/August) — up to 3,000 visitors a day. Be sure to come before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. In the off-season (May, June, September), you will have the beach almost to yourself.
