Rethymno — Venetian Jewel

Rethymno (Ρέθυμνο) is the third-largest city in Crete and has the best-preserved Renaissance old town on the entire island. Smaller and less touristy than Chania, Rethymno exudes a special charm: narrow alleys with wooden balconies, Venetian portals, Ottoman fountains, and minarets — all united in a few square meters.

The highlight is the Fortezza (1573), the largest Venetian fortress in Crete. It towers on the Paleokastro hill above the old town and offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the city, the harbor, and the sea. Inside: the Ibrahim Han Mosque (once a cathedral), ruins of barracks and magazines, and in summer open-air concerts and theater performances. Entrance: 4€.

The Venetian harbor is smaller and more intimate than the one in Chania — a picturesque circle of fishing boats, taverns, and the striking lighthouse. In the evening, the atmosphere is magical: lanterns reflect in the water, Retsina flows, and the minaret of the Nerantzes Mosque stands silhouetted against the evening sky.

Other highlights: The Rimondi Fountain (1626, Venetian fountain with lion heads), the Loggia (Venetian trading house, now museum shop), the lively weekly market (Thursdays), and the long city beach directly east of the old town. Rethymno is also an excellent starting point for excursions to Arkadi (the most important monastery in Crete, 23 km southeast), the Preveli coast, and the gorges of the Ida Mountains.

The Arkadi Monastery (Μονή Αρκαδίου) is Crete's holiest national monument: in 1866, 900 Cretans barricaded themselves here against the Ottoman siege and blew themselves up with the powder magazine rather than surrender. The act became a symbol of the Cretan struggle for freedom and attracted international attention — a turning point in the fight for Crete's independence.
