First-time Visitor Tips
15 things I wish I had known before my first trip to Croatia:
- Croatia has almost no sandy beaches. Pebbles, rocks, and concrete plateaus are the norm. The water is crystal clear, though. Water shoes are a must!
- Plitvice Lakes require an online ticket with a time slot. Without it, you can't get in. Book weeks in advance!
- Dubrovnik is flooded by cruise ships. When 3 ships are in at the same time (up to 10,000 day guests), the old town is barely walkable. Check cruisemapper.com for the schedule.
- Konobas > Restaurants. If the place has laminated photos on the menu, move on. Konobas (family-run eateries) offer the most authentic food.
- Book ferries in advance during peak season! Car ferries to Hvar, Brač, and Vis are booked out days in advance in July/August. Catamarans (passengers only) are more flexible.
- Peka must be pre-ordered — at least 3–4 hours in advance, better in the morning for the evening. It's the national dish and absolutely stunning.
- Bora & Jugo: The Bora is an icy north wind that halts ferries. The Jugo brings humid southern air. Don't go to sea with a Bora warning!
- ENC toll box is worth it. On the highway toll, the express lane (ENC) saves up to 30 minutes of waiting time during peak season. Costs about 15€.
- Tipping is not obligatory, but 10% for good service in restaurants is common. In cafés, rounding up is usual.
- Tap water is drinkable — even at public fountains. Bringing a water bottle saves money and plastic.
- The Pelješac Bridge (2022) now connects Dubrovnik with the rest of Croatia without the Neum corridor through Bosnia. Game changer for drivers.
- Croatians eat late. Dinner from 8–9 PM, even later in peak season. But restaurants serve from 6 PM.
- Google Maps works excellently in Croatia — also for ferry times, bus connections, and local restaurants. Download offline maps for islands.
- Sea urchins are everywhere on rocky beaches. Stepping on them is painful, and the spines are hard to remove. Always wear water shoes!
- Refusing Rakija is rude. The fruit brandy is offered as a welcome gesture. Take a sip, even if it burns. 😄
