Topes de Collantes★★
In the Escambray Mountains behind Trinidad lies the nature park Topes de Collantes—Cuba's best hiking area and a welcome respite from the coastal heat. At an altitude of 800 m, temperatures are 5–10°C cooler than in Trinidad, the vegetation is lush, and the scent of eucalyptus fills the air.
Hikes
- El Nicho: The most popular hike (2 hours round trip). A tropical jungle path leads to a beautiful waterfall with a natural swimming pool. The water is cold and refreshing. Entrance 10 €. Can also be visited from Cienfuegos (60 km).
- Salto del Caburní: A steeper trail (3 hours round trip) to a 62 m high waterfall. More challenging than El Nicho, but less crowded. Entrance 8 €.
- Vegas Grandes: A 3-hour loop through coffee and cocoa plantations to another waterfall. Guide recommended.
Getting There
The road from Trinidad to Topes is steep and poor—only accessible with 4WD, taxi, or organized tour (from 20–30 €/person). Rental cars without 4WD cannot make it. Book the tour through the Casa Particular—they organize everything.
💡 Tipp
Bring swimwear to the El Nicho waterfall! Swimming in the natural pool beneath the waterfall is one of Cuba's most refreshing experiences. In the morning, you are often alone there.
