The Viñales Valley is crisscrossed by an underground cave system formed in the Mogotes. The most famous and tourist-developed cave is the Cueva del Indio (Indian Cave), 5 km north of Viñales.

The cave was rediscovered in 1920 — remains of Taíno Indian settlements (hence the name) prove that it was used as a shelter before the Spanish conquest. The visit begins on foot through a 300 m long passage with stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated in colored light. The second part is the highlight: a boat ride on an underground river, which leads through the cave and then into the open, where you suddenly emerge amidst tropical vegetation.

The tour lasts about 30 minutes and is uncomplicated. Entrance: 5 €. At the exit, snack stands and a bar await.

Other Caves

  • Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás: Cuba's largest cave system (46 km of passages!). Only with a guide and by appointment (through the national park administration). 2-hour tour through huge chambers. Entrance 10 €. A highlight for adventurers!
  • Cueva de San Miguel: Small cave on the outskirts of Viñales with a bar at the entrance — the "Discoteca Palenque". Live music and dancing under stalactites in the evening.

💡 Tipp

Visit the Cueva del Indio in the morning before 10 am — then the bus groups are not there yet, and you have the cave almost to yourself. The boat ride is the best part.
