Mogotes & Hiking★★
The Mogotes are Viñales' geological landmark — and a fantastic hiking area. Most tours lead through the valley between the rocks, past tobacco fields, and through farmland.
Hiking
- Valle del Silencio (Valley of Silence): The most popular hike. 3–4 hours through tobacco fields, past Mogotes, visiting a tobacco farm, and coffee with a farming family. Can be done independently or with a guide (10–15 €). Spectacular scenery.
- Coco Solo – Palmarito: A longer trail (5–6 hours) deeper into the valley. Fewer tourists, more nature. Swimming stop at a natural pool possible.
- Mural de la Prehistoria: A 120 m wide, 80 m high mural on the rock face of a Mogote, depicting the history of evolution. Painted by Leovigildo González in 1961 on Fidel Castro's commission. Artistically controversial, but a popular photo motif. Entrance 3 €.
- Los Acuáticos: A mountain community that believes in the healing power of water. The hike (2 hours) leads steeply uphill to a viewpoint with a fantastic valley view.
Climbing
The Mogotes offer excellent climbing — over 100 routes (5a–8a), mostly bolted. Cuba Climbing is the community that develops and maintains the routes. The rock walls are made of sharp limestone (gloves recommended). Best season: November–March (cooler).
Horseback Riding
Riding through the valley on the back of a Cuban Criollo horse is one of the most beautiful ways to experience the landscape. 2–3 hour tours from 15–25 €/person, organized through the Casa Particular or directly with farmers.
