Tobacco Plantations★★★

The province of Pinar del Río produces the best tobacco in the world — and the Viñales Valley is the epicenter. Here grow the leaves for Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagás, and Romeo y Julieta. A visit to a Finca Tabacalera (tobacco farm) is one of Cuba's most unforgettable experiences.

Most farms are small family businesses that have been cultivating the same soil for generations. The farmer (Veguero) shows you the entire process:

  • Growing: The tobacco plants grow from October to February. The upper leaves (Ligero — strong) are picked individually, the lower ones (Volado — mild) in bundles
  • Drying: The leaves hang for 45–60 days in the airy Casas de Tabaco (drying barns), where they mature from green to yellow to brown
  • Fermentation: The dried leaves are stacked in Pilones (piles) and ferment over months — this is where the flavors develop
  • Rolling: In the end, the farmer rolls a cigar before your eyes — filler, binder, wrapper — and you get to smoke it

The visits are informal and cordial: You sit with the farmer on the porch, drink coffee (or rum), smoke the freshly rolled cigar, and listen to stories. Most farmers also offer cigars for sale — significantly cheaper than in the city (1–3 € per piece), but without an official band (legal for personal use, up to 50 pieces duty-free).

💡 Tipp

The best tobacco farm in Viñales is that of Alejandro Robaina or Benito — ask for a recommendation at your Casa Particular. The farmers do not expect an entrance fee but appreciate a tip of 3–5 € and the purchase of some cigars.

Achtung

The cigars purchased on the farms have no official band. At German customs, you are allowed to bring in a maximum of 50 pieces. Larger quantities will be confiscated, and fines may be imposed.
