Duty-Free Shopping★★
Langkawi has been a Duty-Free Zone since 1987 — the entire island is duty-free. This means: Alcohol, chocolate, perfume, tobacco, and electronics are significantly cheaper than on the mainland. For Malaysia travelers who enjoy a beer, Langkawi is a paradise: A can of Tiger Beer costs 3–5 MYR here instead of 12–18 MYR on the mainland.
Where to shop?
- Kuah Town: The island's capital has the largest concentration of duty-free shops — shops line up along the main street. Zon Duty Free and Coco Valley are the most well-known.
- Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall: Air-conditioned mall in Kuah with duty-free shops and local boutiques.
- Pantai Cenang: Along the main street, there are also several duty-free shops, mini-markets, and souvenir stores.
Import limit: When leaving Langkawi back to the mainland, limits apply: 1 liter of alcohol, 200 cigarettes. This is checked — especially at the jetty and airport.
💡 Tipp
Langkawi tip for budget travelers: Buy your alcohol supply for the entire Malaysia trip on Langkawi — a bottle of whiskey for 30 MYR (€6) instead of 120 MYR on the mainland. Chocolate (Toblerone, Lindt) is also dirt cheap.
