Best Travel Time & Climate
Malaysia is located just above the equator and has a tropical-equatorial climate — warm all year round (27–34 °C), humid, and with rainy seasons that vary depending on the coast. The good news: there is always a region in Malaysia that is in season.
Two Monsoons, Two Coasts
- West Coast (KL, Penang, Langkawi): Rainy season from September to November, but less intense than on the East Coast. Can be visited all year round, best months: December to March.
- East Coast (Perhentians, Tioman, Kota Bharu): Northeast monsoon from November to February — islands partially closed, ferry services suspended. Best time: March to October.
- Borneo (Sabah & Sarawak): Rainy season from October to February, but rain falls year-round. Driest months: March to September. Mount Kinabalu can be climbed all year round.

💡 Tipp
Malaysia is not a seasonal country — you can travel all year round, you just need to choose the right region. When the East Coast islands are closed in winter, the West Coast is perfect. And vice versa. Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands are always an option.
Achtung
The Perhentian Islands, Tioman, and Redang are closed from November to February due to the northeast monsoon. Hotels and dive schools completely shut down. Do not book accommodation on the East Coast islands during this time!
