Overview of Regions

Malaysia consists of two parts, separated by the South China Sea: the Malay Peninsula (West Malaysia) and Borneo (East Malaysia with Sabah and Sarawak). For travelers, five regions are particularly relevant:

🏙️ Kuala Lumpur

George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the culinary capital of Southeast Asia. Colonial shophouses, spectacular street art, Chinese clan temples, and the best street food on the continent. Plus beaches and the Kek Lok Si Temple.

🏝️ Langkawi

For whom: Beach lovers, families, duty-free shoppers
The archipelago of 99 islands is Malaysia's beach paradise. Sky Bridge, mangrove tours, island hopping, duty-free shopping, and relaxed island life. Langkawi is the perfect place to arrive or unwind.

🌴 Borneo (Sabah & Sarawak)

For whom: Nature lovers, divers, adventurers
The third-largest island in the world is shared by Malaysia with Indonesia and Brunei. Orangutans, proboscis monkeys, Mount Kinabalu, the Mulu Caves, Sipadan diving, and the Kinabatangan River — Borneo is a nature paradise like no other.

🌊 East Coast & Highlands

For whom: Island lovers, hikers, nature enthusiasts
The Perhentian Islands and Tioman offer dreamlike beaches and snorkeling. The Cameron Highlands attract with tea plantations and cool climate. Taman Negara is the oldest rainforest in the world. Kota Bharu showcases traditional Malay life.
