Discovering the Island's Heartland

The island's center — in Catalan Es Pla (the plain) — is the agricultural backbone of Mallorca. A gently rolling landscape of grain fields, almond and olive groves, vineyards, and fig trees stretches between the Serra de Tramuntana in the north and the Serres de Llevant in the east. People have lived here for centuries from agriculture, and here you can still feel the Mallorca that existed before the tourism boom.

The windmills are the symbol of the region. Hundreds of the stone Molins (grain mills) and Molins de Sang (pump windmills for irrigation) are scattered across the landscape — most in disrepair, some lovingly restored. Especially around Algaida and Montuïri, the silhouettes of the windmills line up on the horizon.

The weekly markets are the cultural heart of the region. Every village has its market day, and the markets of Sineu (Wednesday) and Inca (Thursday) are among the largest and most authentic on the island. Here, locals shop — fresh vegetables, Sobrassada (Mallorcan paprika sausage), local cheese, almonds, olives, basketware. Tourists are welcome, but not the target audience.

The wine renaissance of the last 20 years has changed the island's center. The DO Binissalem (Denominación de Origen, protected designation of origin) now produces wines of international caliber. The native grape varieties Manto Negro (red) and Prensal Blanc (white, also called Moll) produce wines with unique character. About 15 wineries offer tastings and tours — a must for wine lovers.

In February, the island's center transforms into a pink-white sea of blossoms: the almond blossom (Flor d'ametller) covers the landscape with millions of delicate blossoms. It is one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in Europe — and a perfect reason to visit Mallorca in the off-season.

The island's center is ideal as a day trip from Palma (all locations reachable within 30–40 minutes) or as a base for a quiet vacation on a finca. The distances are short, the roads are good, and in the evening you have the choice between authentic village restaurants and the nightlife in Palma.

💡 Tipp

The best way to experience the island's center: A rental car day from Palma. Route: Algaida (windmills, glass art at Gordiola) → Montuïri (view over the plain) → Sineu (market, only on Wednesdays!) → Inca (Celler restaurant) → Binissalem (wine tasting). Return via the highway in 20 minutes. Total distance about 90 km.
