Bacalar — The Lagoon of Seven Colors★★★

Bacalar is Mexico's best-kept secret on the Caribbean coast — a 55 km long freshwater lagoon with seven different shades of blue, from crystal to turquoise to deep blue. The nickname "Laguna de los Siete Colores" fits perfectly.

Bacalar is the anti-Cancún: no high-rises, no clubs, no mass tourism infrastructure. Instead: eco-hotels by the water, kayak tours through the canals, cenotes in the jungle, and a tranquility long lost on the Riviera Maya.

Activities

  • Kayak on the Lagoon: The crystal-clear, shallow water is ideal for paddling. The stromatolites (living rock formations, similar to the origin of life 3.5 billion years ago) on the west shore are geologically unique.
  • Cenote Azul: The largest open cenote in Mexico (300 m diameter, 90 m deep!) is right by the lagoon. Swimming, cliff jumping, snorkeling. Free!
  • Pirate Fortress (Fuerte de San Felipe): Small fortress (1729) on the shore, built against pirates and Maya insurgents. Museum on the pirate history of the Caribbean. 70 MXN.
  • Canal de los Piratas: A narrow canal through mangroves, lined with stromatolites. By kayak or boat.
  • Sailing Tour: Catamaran tours over the lagoon with stops for swimming. From 600 MXN per person.

💡 Tipp

Bacalar is perfect for 2–3 quiet days at the end of a Yucatán tour. Book an eco-hotel with a jetty directly on the lagoon — jumping into the turquoise water in the morning is priceless.

Achtung

The stromatolites in the lagoon are living organisms that take thousands of years to grow. Never step on or touch them!
