Täglich 8:00–17:00 Uhr
95 MXN (ca. 5€)

Tulum is where archaeology meets Caribbean postcard: The Maya ruins sit atop a cliff above turquoise water and white sandy beach. It is the most photographed spot in Mexico — and one of the few places where you can swim in the sea after visiting the ruins.

Zona Arqueológica de Tulum

The ruins are small compared to Chichén Itzá (30 min is enough), but the location is unbeatable. Tulum was a Maya port and trading post (1200–1500 AD) and one of the last Maya cities inhabited when the Spaniards arrived.

  • El Castillo: The main temple on the cliff — the iconic image.
  • Templo de los Frescos: Still preserved murals.
  • Playa Ruinas: The beach below the ruins. Yes, you can swim!

Entry: 95 MXN. Daily 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. Come at 8 AM! From 10 AM, buses from Cancún start arriving.

Tulum Pueblo vs. Beach Zone

  • Tulum Pueblo: The actual town on the main road. Cheap hostels, authentic tacos, relaxed. This is where the backpackers stay.
  • Beach Zone (Zona Hotelera): The hip, expensive side: bamboo boutique hotels, yoga retreats, Instagram swings over the beach, vegan restaurants. Beautiful, but steep prices (cocktail 250+ MXN).

💡 Tipp

Experience the ruins at sunrise — the site opens at 8 AM, but from the cliff to the south (freely accessible), you have the most magical view at 6:30 AM when the sun rises over the sea.
