Playa del Carmen★★

Playa del Carmen (short: "Playa") is the most popular alternative to Cancún — fewer high-rises, more charm, but also highly touristy. The Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) is the 4 km long pedestrian zone parallel to the beach: restaurants, bars, boutiques, and street performers.

Highlights

  • Quinta Avenida: The promenade. Best in the evening when the heat subsides and street performers appear.
  • Playa Mamitas & Playa 28: The main beaches — white sand, clear water, beach clubs with DJs.
  • Cenote Azul: 25 km south. Open cenote, perfect for jumping (5 m cliff). 200 MXN.
  • Xcaret & Xel-Há: Eco-theme parks with snorkeling, underground rivers, butterfly garden, and evening show. Expensive (from 2,500 MXN), but great for families.

Playa del Carmen is the ferry terminal for Cozumel (45 min crossing, 400 MXN round trip). Also suitable as a base for Tulum (1h), cenotes, and Akumal (turtle snorkeling).

💡 Tipp

The blocks between 30th and 40th Street are noticeably quieter and cheaper than the tourist core zone around Quinta Avenida. There you will find authentic tacos and quieter beaches.
