Biogradska Gora — Europe's Primeval Forest

The Biogradska Gora National Park protects one of the last three primeval forests in Europe — a forest that has never been logged since the last Ice Age. On just 54 km² (the smallest of Montenegro's five national parks), trees over 500 years old are hidden, with trunks up to 50 meters high and trunk diameters of over 1.5 meters.

What to Expect

The park is located in the Bjelasica Mountains between Kolašin and Mojkovac. Its heart is the Biogradsko Jezero (Biogradsko Lake) — an emerald green glacial lake at 1,094 m altitude, surrounded by dense, untouched forest. The atmosphere is almost surreal: moss covers every stone, streams rush through fallen giant trees, woodpeckers hammer in the silence, and light breaks through the dense canopy in green rays.

  • Trail around the Lake — An easy path (3.5 km, approx. 1 hour) leads around the entire lake. Ideal for families and anyone wanting to soak up the primeval forest atmosphere.
  • Hike to Bendovac — A moderate tour (approx. 4 hours) leads to the ridge above the lake with panoramic views over the Bjelasica Mountains.
  • Forest Nature Trail — A short, signposted trail explains the unique ecology of the primeval forest. 86 tree species have been counted here — more than in all of Scandinavia combined.
  • Fishing — Trout that have been isolated for millennia live in Biogradsko Lake. Fishing permits are available at the park entrance.

Practical: Entrance: 3€ per person. The park is accessible by car from Kolašin (20 km). There is a parking lot at the lake, a small café, and rustic wooden cabins (bungalows from 30€/night) — one of the most authentic accommodations in Montenegro. Season: May–October (access is restricted in winter). Most beautiful in September/October, when the primeval forest is clad in spectacular autumn colors.
