Durmitor National Park (UNESCO)

The Durmitor National Park is Montenegro's most spectacular natural wonder and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. The massif rises in the northwest of the country on a plateau and encompasses 390 km² of alpine wilderness with 48 peaks over 2,000 meters, 18 glacial lakes, extensive forests, and one of the deepest gorges in the world.

Highlights

  • Bobotov Kuk (2,522 m) — The highest accessible peak in Montenegro. The hike starts at the Sedlo Pass (1,907 m) and takes 6–8 hours (round trip). Challenging but not technically difficult — sturdy footwear and surefootedness required. The 360° panorama from the summit over the entire Montenegrin mountain world is one of the most overwhelming experiences of the Balkans. Best time: July–September.
  • Tara Gorge (Kanjon Tare) — At 1,300 meters deep, the deepest gorge in Europe and the second deepest in the world (after the Grand Canyon). The Tara flows with emerald green water through the gorge — the water is so clear that you can see every stone on the bottom. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge (1940), 172 meters above the river, is an architectural marvel and a popular photo stop. Zip-lining is also offered from the bridge (25€).
  • Crno Jezero (Black Lake) — The most famous of the 18 glacial lakes in Durmitor, just 3 km from the town of Žabljak. An easy circular trail (3.5 km, 1 hour) leads around the lake, which glows in deep emerald green and is framed by pine forests and rock walls. Brave enough in midsummer? The water reaches a maximum of 17°C — refreshing! National park entrance: 3€.
  • Ice Cave (Ledena Pećina) — A fascinating cave at 2,040 m altitude with year-round ice formations. The hike there (2–3 hours from Žabljak) leads through alpine meadows with spectacular views. Bring a flashlight!

Rafting on the Tara

Rafting through the Tara Gorge is one of Europe's great adventures. The standard route covers 18 km with 21 rapids (Class III–IV) and takes 2.5–3 hours. Providers organize full-day tours (incl. transport, equipment, lunch) from 50–90€. Multi-day tours (2–3 days, 82 km) are the ultimate experience for adventurers — with overnight stays in riverside camps. Season: May–October, best conditions June–September. No rafting experience needed, but swimming skills required.

Žabljak — Base Camp for the Durmitor

Žabljak (1,456 m, approx. 1,800 inhabitants) is the highest town in the Balkans and the gateway to the Durmitor. Here you will find hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and outdoor outfitters. In winter, Žabljak is a ski resort with the Savin Kuk ski area (day pass: 15–20€) — modest compared to the Alps, but unbeatable in price. In summer, it is the base for hiking, mountain biking, and canyoning.

💡 Tipp

You should book the Tara rafting tour at least a week in advance, and in July/August even two weeks. The best providers start from Šćepan Polje (confluence of Tara and Piva). Compare prices — the quality is similar, but prices vary greatly.
