Prokletije — The "Accursed Mountains"

The Prokletije (literally: "Accursed Mountains", also known as the Albanian Alps) are Montenegro's wildest and most inaccessible mountain range — and have been a national park since 2009. The massif stretches along the border with Albania and Kosovo and is one of the most rugged mountain landscapes in Europe: sheer rock walls, deep cirques, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and a seclusion that is unparalleled in Europe.

Highlights

  • Zla Kolata (2,534 m) — The highest peak in Montenegro (on the Albanian border). The ascent is a demanding day tour from the village of Vusanje and requires alpine experience. Reward: a view over three countries.
  • Hridsko Jezero (Hridsko Lake) — A breathtaking glacial lake at 1,970 m altitude, nestled in a rocky basin. The hike from Vusanje takes 5–6 hours (one way) and leads through alpine meadows and scree slopes. One of the most beautiful high mountain hikes in the Balkans.
  • Grlja Waterfall — An easily accessible waterfall near the village of Vusanje (30 min. hike). The water cascades over limestone rocks into a natural pool — perfect for cooling off on hot days.
  • Ali-Pasha Springs (Ali-Pašini izvori) — Turquoise karst springs near Gusinje, which gather into one of Montenegro's most beautiful natural pools. The water is ice-cold (8°C year-round), but the color is breathtaking. Easily accessible from the road.

Gusinje & Vusanje — Gateway to the Prokletije

The two villages of Gusinje and Vusanje at the foot of the Prokletije are the starting points for all hikes. Here you will find simple guesthouses (from 20€/night), hospitable families renting rooms, and local mountain guides who know the routes. The atmosphere is authentic and rugged — no luxury, but honest mountain culture. The region is predominantly Muslim (Bosniak and Albanian population), which is reflected in the architecture and cuisine: Burek, Mantije (stuffed pastries), and strong Turkish coffee.

Important: The Prokletije are not beginner mountains. There are few marked trails, the weather can change quickly, and mobile reception is sporadic. For the major tours (Zla Kolata, Hridsko Jezero), a local mountain guide is strongly recommended (from 50€/day). Best time: July–September.

Achtung

The Prokletije on the Albanian border are wilderness in the true sense. Always inform someone about your planned route, take enough water and warm clothing, and start hikes early — thunderstorms often develop in the afternoon. A GPS device or offline maps are recommended.
