Money & Payment

Euro — Without EU Membership

Montenegro uses the Euro (€) as its official currency — even though it is not an EU member and does not mint its own coins. This unilateral euro adoption (since 2002, previously Deutsche Mark!) makes payment extremely easy for German travelers: no exchange rates, no conversion.

Cash & Cards

  • Cash is still important in Montenegro. In cities and tourist areas, most restaurants and hotels accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), but in rural areas, small konobas, bus stations, and for taxis, you need cash.
  • ATMs (Bankomat) are available in all cities and tourist areas. Withdrawals with German EC cards (Maestro/V-Pay) and credit cards work reliably. Fees: depend on your bank, often €3–5 per withdrawal. Tip: Always choose "without currency conversion" at the ATM — otherwise, the ATM operator charges a surcharge.
  • Contactless payment works in larger stores and hotels but is not yet standard everywhere.

Tipping

Tipping is common in Montenegro but not mandatory. In restaurants: 5–10% of the bill (or round up to the next full euro). In tourist restaurants, a "service charge" is sometimes added — then no further tip is needed. For taxi drivers: round up. For mountain guides and rafting guides: €5–10 as a sign of appreciation.
