Discovering Kathmandu

Kathmandu is overwhelming, chaotic, and magical — often all at once. The city at 1,350 m altitude spreads out in a fertile valley basin, overlooked by green hills and — on clear days — the snow-white Himalayas on the horizon. Here, Hindu temples stand next to Buddhist stupas, medieval palaces next to concrete buildings, sacred cows next to scooters.

The Kathmandu Valley is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites and was once divided into three rival kingdoms — Kathmandu, Patan (Lalitpur), and Bhaktapur — each trying to outdo the other with ever more magnificent temples and palaces. The legacy of this rivalry: one of the densest concentrations of cultural treasures in the world.

For those landing in Kathmandu for the first time, it's a sensory overload: The smell of incense mixes with car exhaust and the scent of freshly fried street food. Temple bells, motorcycle horns, Hindi music from loudspeakers, and the murmur of mantras form a constant acoustic symphony. At every corner a shrine, at every shrine flower garlands, Tika powder, and butter lamps. After three days, you've acclimatized — not just to the altitude, but to the beautiful chaos that defines this valley.

Orientation

The most important districts and places for travelers in the Kathmandu Valley:

  • Thamel: The tourist center — a labyrinth of narrow alleys full of outdoor shops, trekking agencies, restaurants, bars, and guesthouses. Organize your trekking here, buy equipment, and meet other travelers. Loud, colorful, chaotic — and somehow irresistible.
  • Durbar Square (Kathmandu): The old royal palace with temples and pagodas. Damaged by the 2015 earthquake, but still impressive. UNESCO World Heritage.
  • Patan (Lalitpur): The "City of Beauty" south of Kathmandu with the most beautiful Durbar Square in the valley and a vibrant Newari culture. Reachable by taxi in 20 minutes.
  • Bhaktapur: The best-preserved of the three royal cities, 13 km east. Medieval flair, brick paving, pottery squares, and hardly any motor traffic. A day trip that is absolutely worth it.
  • Boudha (Boudhanath): The Tibetan quarter around the massive Boudhanath Stupa. Monasteries, butter lamps, prayer wheels, and the best Tibetan cuisine in Nepal.
  • Swayambhu: The hill west of the center with the famous Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple). Panorama over the entire valley.
  • Lazimpat & Maharajgunj: The diplomatic district north of Thamel — quieter, upscale, with international restaurants and the best hotels in the city.
  • Freak Street (Jhochhen Tol): In the 1960s/70s THE hippie mecca of Asia — Bob Segal, Cat Stevens, and the Beatles came here. Today quieter and cheaper than Thamel, but with nostalgic charm and some good budget accommodations.

💡 Tipp

Thamel is the perfect base for your stay in Kathmandu: All trekking agencies, outdoor shops, and restaurants are within walking distance. But don't expect a quiet boutique hotel — it's loud, dusty, and chaotic. Those who prefer it quieter should stay in Patan or near the Boudhanath Stupa.
