Patan (Lalitpur)★★★
★★★ Patan (Lalitpur) — The City of Beauty
Patan, officially Lalitpur ("City of Beauty"), lies directly south of Kathmandu and boasts the most beautiful and best-preserved Durbar Square in the Kathmandu Valley. While Kathmandu's Old Town often appears dusty and chaotic, Patan has a quieter, artistic atmosphere. The city was once an independent kingdom of the Newari Malla dynasty and remains the center of Newari culture, famous for metalwork, Thangka painting, traditional wood carving, and a vibrant art scene.
★★★ Patan Durbar Square (UNESCO World Heritage)
The most beautiful Durbar Square in the Kathmandu Valley — and one of the most impressive public squares in South Asia. The west side is dominated by the former royal palace, the east side by a series of spectacular temples. Highlights:
- Krishna Mandir: The only stone Shikhara temple in Nepal (most temples in the valley are wooden pagodas). Built in 1637, with intricate stone reliefs depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Hundreds of devotees gather here for prayers on full moon nights
- Bhimsen Temple: Three-story pagoda dedicated to the merchant's guardian deity. The golden metal facade on the first floor is a highlight
- Vishwanath Temple: Two-story pagoda with two stone elephants at the entrance and erotic carvings on the roof struts
- Taleju Bell: Huge bronze bell from 1737 — ringing it draws the attention of the goddess Taleju to one's plea
- King's Column: King Yoganarendra Malla kneels on a column, gazing at the Taleju Temple. Legend says: As long as a golden cobra protects his head and a golden bird sits on top, Kathmandu cannot fall
★★★ Patan Museum
In the restored north wing of the royal palace — the best museum in Nepal and one of the best in South Asia. The collection of Hindu and Buddhist bronze sculptures, wood carvings, and ritual objects is outstanding. The exhibition also explains the architecture of pagoda temples and the iconography of deities — perfect for better understanding the temples in the valley. The building itself, a restored Malla palace, is as worth seeing as the exhibits. In the courtyard: the pleasant Museum Café with good coffee and a view of Durbar Square.
Included in the ticket for Durbar Square. Daily 10:30–17:30 (last entry 16:30), closed on Mondays.
★★ Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (Golden Temple)
A three-story Buddhist monastery, its facade completely covered with gilded copper — a glittering jewel in a side alley north of Durbar Square. Founded in the 12th century, the temple is tended by a priest who is replaced every 30 days by a new community member — uninterrupted for 800 years. In the courtyard: tiny golden statues, incense sticks, butter lamps, and an atmosphere of deep devotion.
North of Durbar Square, through an inconspicuous alley. 50 NPR entry. Leave shoes and leather goods at the entrance!
★★ Mahabouddha (Temple of a Thousand Buddhas)
A Shikhara temple, its entire surface made of terracotta bricks, each bearing a Buddha image — over 9,000 Buddhas in total! Built in the 14th century, modeled after the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya (India). The temple is squeezed between residential buildings in a narrow alley — a surprising discovery.
Southeast of Durbar Square. 100 NPR entry.
Art & Craft in Patan
Patan is the best place in the Kathmandu Valley to discover and buy traditional crafts:
- Metalwork: In the workshops around Durbar Square and in Thaina Tol, Newar craftsmen cast bronze Buddhas, Shiva statues, and ritual vessels using traditional lost-wax methods. You can book workshops (from 3,000 NPR)
- Thangka Painting: There are numerous workshops in Patan where you can watch the painters at work. Recommendation: The workshops near the Golden Temple
- Wood Carving: In the alleys east of Durbar Square, woodcarvers work on window frames, temple decorations, and reproductions of historical pieces
Entry Patan Durbar Square: 1,000 NPR (approx. 6.50€) for foreigners, including Patan Museum. Ticket valid for the day. Arrival: Taxi from Thamel 20 min. (300–500 NPR), or on foot over the Bagmati Bridge (45 min.). The route over the bridge is an adventure in itself.
