Ponsonby & Karangahape Road★★

Ponsonby Road & Karangahape Road, Auckland

Ponsonby is Auckland's hippest district — Victorian villas with wrought-iron balconies, boutiques, designer shops, and some of the city's best restaurants line Ponsonby Road. In the 1970s, the district was a run-down working-class area with a high Māori and Pacific population — gentrification since the 1990s has changed the demographics but preserved the creative, slightly bohemian character. The Victorian cottages that once cost 30,000 NZD now go for over 2 million.

The Ponsonby Road is Auckland's best food mile. Saan (160 Ponsonby Road) serves world-class northern Thai cuisine — Laab Gai with grilled rice and mint, Tom Yum with fresh prawns, Khao Soi curry — one of New Zealand's best restaurants (main course 28–38 NZD, reservation!). Azabu (26 Ponsonby Road) fuses Japanese and Peruvian cuisine (Nikkei) — ceviche meets sashimi, tiradito meets wagyu tataki (main course 32–45 NZD). For a relaxed brunch, Dizengoff is an institution — for over 30 years, they have been serving the perfect flat white and eggs benedict (brunch 18–28 NZD). The Ponsonby Road Bistro offers New Zealand bistro cuisine with local wines on a sunny terrace.

South of Ponsonby lies Karangahape Road — or "K Road" — Auckland's most alternative district. Once a red-light district and melting pot of the marginalized, today a vibrant mix of vintage shops, underground bars, LGBT+ venues, street art, and ethnic restaurants — without the sterility of gentrified neighborhoods. Here lives Auckland's creative soul. The bar Whammy is Auckland's best live music venue for independent bands — small stage, great local bands, beer from 10 NZD. At Peach Pit, there are natural wines and DJ sets until late (Tuesday to Saturday). Gemmayze Street serves Lebanese mezze (sharing plates 14–22 NZD) — one of the city's best ethnic restaurants.

Every Saturday, a farmers market takes place in nearby Grey Lynn Park (8:00–12:00) — fresh vegetables, artisanal cheese, Māori bread (Rewena — a sourdough bread made from fermented potatoes, a must-try!), wildflower honey from the Waitakere Ranges, and the best flat white in the neighborhood from a converted garage.

💡 Tipp

Ponsonby and K Road are within walking distance from the CBD (20 minutes). The best time for Ponsonby Road is Saturday morning (brunch culture!) and Friday evening (bar hopping). K Road comes alive only after 9 PM — start with cocktails at Madame George and end at Whammy with live music.
