Rangitoto is the youngest and largest of Auckland's 50+ volcanoes — it rose from the sea only 600 years ago, when the Māori were already living here and witnessed the eruption. The perfect, symmetrical silhouette dominates the view from the waterfront and is Auckland's number one postcard motif. The name means "blood-red sky" (Ngā Rangi-i-totongia-a-Tamatekapua) — named after the fiery red sky during the eruption.

The island is a nature reserve with no permanent residents and hosts the world's largest pōhutukawa forest — New Zealand's "Christmas tree," which blooms in bright red in December, turning the entire island into a red carpet. The Summit Track (1 hour one way, well-developed with boardwalks over the lava fields) leads over solidified lava fields to the 259-meter-high summit with a 360-degree panorama over the entire Hauraki Gulf, Auckland's skyline, the Coromandel Peninsula, and on particularly clear days even to Mount Taranaki (270 km away).

On the way, you pass Lava Caves — low caves in the solidified basalt (some only 1.2 meters high, duck your head!), which you can explore with a flashlight. The largest cave is about 50 meters long. The vegetation on the young volcanic island is fascinating: Over 200 tree species and 40 fern species grow on bare lava rock — a living laboratory of ecology that attracts biologists from around the world. From the summit, you can see how the vegetation increases concentrically from the bare rock in the middle to the dense forest on the coast.

The Fullers Ferry departs from Downtown Auckland to Rangitoto in 25 minutes (first ferry 9:15, last return 15:30 — check times!). There is no drinking water, no shops, and no toilets on the island — bring everything with you! The summit loop takes about 3 hours in total. For a more leisurely experience: The Volcanic Explorer (tractor train, 69 NZD) goes almost to the summit — ideal for families and older visitors.

💡 Tipp

Combine Rangitoto with the neighboring island Motutapu via a bridge — there you will find secluded beaches and historical bunkers from World War II (New Zealand feared a Japanese invasion). Be sure to bring enough water (at least 2 liters per person) — the black lava absorbs the sun's heat, and there is little shade. Sunscreen is a must — the dark lava reflects UV radiation.
