Viaduct Harbour & Wynyard Quarter★★

Viaduct Harbour, Auckland CBD 1010

Viaduct Harbour was once a dirty industrial port — until the America's Cup 2000 and 2003 transformed the area into Auckland's most elegant waterfront district. Today, superyachts lie next to historic sailing ships, and the promenade is lined with restaurants, bars, and cafés. The New Zealand Maritime Museum (20 NZD) tells the story of Polynesian navigation and New Zealand's maritime tradition — including a replica of a Waka Hourua (Polynesian double-hulled ocean-going canoe).

The adjacent Wynyard Quarter is Auckland's newest district — a successful example of waterfront regeneration. The Silo Park complex with repurposed grain silos hosts weekend markets, open-air cinema in summer, and public art. The distinctive silos are illuminated at night and a popular photo motif. The Daldy Street Market (Saturdays 8:00–12:00) offers fresh street food from around the world — from Samoan Oka (raw fish in coconut milk, 12 NZD) to Japanese Takoyaki (10 NZD), from Ethiopian Injera wraps to New Zealand meat pies.

For foodies, the Auckland Fish Market in Wynyard Quarter is a must: fresh fish and seafood, a food court with sushi, fish & chips, and seafood chowder (from 14 NZD), plus cooking classes (from 120 NZD, 3 hours — you learn to fillet and prepare New Zealand fish). The best fish & chips portion is at The Fishmonger — fried blue cod with kumara wedges (sweet potato) and homemade tartar sauce (18 NZD). Pair with a local craft beer from Hallertau or Brothers — perfect.

In the evening, the Viaduct transforms into Auckland's nightlife district. Dr. Rudi's Rooftop Brewing Co. offers craft beer (12–16 NZD/pint), bowling lanes with harbor views, and a relaxed rooftop atmosphere. Saint Alice serves cocktails (18–24 NZD) with views of the yachts, while Parasol & Swing mixes tiki cocktails on the terrace in summer.

The brand-new Te Wānanga Waterfront promenade connects the Viaduct with the Britomart Transport Centre and Queens Wharf — a beautiful evening walk of about 2 kilometers along the water, past the iconic Wynyard Crossing (a walkable double drawbridge) and the Westhaven Marina, New Zealand's largest yacht harbor.

💡 Tipp

Silo Park shows open-air movies on a giant screen on Fridays in summer (December–March) — free! Just bring a picnic blanket and snacks. Saturdays feature a farmers market with local honey, cheese, and fresh bread. The Viaduct is the most expensive dining area — for cheaper options, go to the Fish Market.
