Waiheke Island — Island of Wines★★★
Waiheke Island is Auckland's most beautiful day trip — an island that combines wine culture, olive groves, art galleries, and golden beaches, just 40 minutes by ferry from the CBD. Waiheke has its own microclimate: drier and sunnier than Auckland, with 100 fewer rainy days per year — perfect for wine growing and beach days.
★★★ The Vineyards
Over 30 vineyards on just 92 square kilometers produce some of New Zealand's best wines. The stars are Bordeaux blends and Syrah:
Mudbrick Vineyard & Restaurant (126 Church Bay Road) is the flagship of the island. The restored stone building sits atop a hill with panoramic views over the Hauraki Gulf — on clear days, you can see to the Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier Island. The wine tasting (25 NZD for 5 wines) includes their legendary Shepherd's Point Merlot/Cabernet and an excellent Chardonnay. The restaurant is one of the best in New Zealand — three-course lunch from 95 NZD, with perfectly matched wine pairing. Reservation recommended weeks in advance.
Cable Bay Vineyards (12 Nick Johnstone Drive) impresses with modern architecture — the winery was designed by New Zealand star architect Ken Crosson and blends spectacularly into the landscape. The restaurant serves a degustation menu (7 courses, 150 NZD) that combines seasonal island ingredients with their own wines. The tasting (20 NZD for 4 wines) takes place on a terrace with sea views.
Stonyridge Vineyard (80 Onetangi Road) produces the "Larose", regularly considered one of the best red wines in the Southern Hemisphere — a Bordeaux blend that competes with French premiers crus in good years. The bottle costs from 130 NZD, the tasting 15 NZD (creditable on purchase). Every Saturday, there is a guided wine tour with the winemaker (11:30 AM, 25 NZD including 4 wines and olive oil tasting).
Other recommended vineyards: Tantalus Estate (modern design, excellent rosé, craft brewery on site), Batch Winery (relaxed atmosphere, platters and wine with views, tasting 15 NZD), Man O' War (remote on the east coast, accessible only by boat or gravel road — wine directly on the beach, one of New Zealand's most magical wine experiences).
★★ The Beaches
Oneroa Beach is the main beach with golden sand and beachfront cafés — perfect for families. Palm Beach (to the east) is quieter, more sheltered, and has fine white sand — ideal for swimming. Onetangi Beach is the longest beach on the island (2 km) and a popular surf spot with east wind. And the remote Man O' War Bay with the namesake winery offers the ultimate Waiheke experience: wine on the beach, feet in the sand, the gulf before you — further away from everyday life is not possible.
Activities Beyond Wine
EcoZip Adventures (150 Onetangi Road) offers three zipline courses over the bush forest and vineyards — 280 meters long, 40 meters high, with sea views (from 55 NZD, including guided bush walk afterward). The Waiheke Island Art Trail leads to over 40 galleries and studios — many artists have settled on Waiheke, attracted by the light and lifestyle.
The island can be explored by hop-on/hop-off bus (55 NZD day pass), bicycle (e-bikes from 45 NZD/half day), or on foot. For full enjoyment, book a wine tasting tour (from 150 NZD, including 3–4 wineries and lunch), so you don't have to drive yourself — and can fully enjoy each tasting.
💡 Tipp
The Fullers Ferry departs from Downtown Auckland every 30–60 minutes (return 44 NZD). Take the first ferry (7:00 or 8:00) to make the most of the day. Book a spot in advance on weekends — Waiheke is also very popular with Aucklanders. Alternatively: The "Waiheke Wine & Dine Pass" (95 NZD) includes ferry and tastings at 3 wineries.
