Hofburg & Museumsquartier★★★

Schatzkammer 16 €, Sisi Museum 18 €, MQ-Museen 14–16 €

The Hofburg was the power center of the Habsburgs for over 600 years — from the 13th century until the end of the monarchy in 1918. Today, the vast building complex houses the Austrian National Library, the Spanish Riding School, the Imperial Treasury, and the offices of the Federal President. One could easily spend an entire day here and still not see everything.

★★★ Imperial Treasury

The most important treasury in the world: the Crown of the Holy Roman Empire (10th century), the Burgundian Treasure, the Holy Lance (allegedly the lance of Longinus), and the largest cut emerald in the world (2,680 carats). Even for those not interested in monarchy, the sheer splendor of this collection is overwhelming.

Schweizerhof, Hofburg. 16 €. Wed–Mon 9 AM–5:30 PM, Tue closed.

★★★ Spanish Riding School

For over 450 years, Lipizzaner stallions have been trained here in the art of classical horsemanship — a tradition that is part of the intangible UNESCO World Heritage. The morning exercise (Monday break) offers an affordable opportunity (16 €) to watch the horses training in the baroque Winter Riding School. The gala performances (from 30–185 €) are often sold out months in advance.

Michaelerplatz 1. Morning exercise 16 €, gala evenings 30–185 €. Performances: Wed, Sat, Sun (seasonal). Tickets must be booked in advance!

★★★ Sisi Museum & Imperial Apartments

In the Reichskanzleitrakt of the Hofburg: the private living and working quarters of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth ("Sisi"). The museum traces the true life of the empress — far from the kitschy film version: a restless, anorexic, highly intelligent woman who hated the confines of the court and fled across Europe. Her gym equipment, her diet recipes (veal juice for breakfast!), and her death mask are deeply human exhibits.

Michaelerkuppel, Hofburg. 18 € (incl. Silver Collection & Imperial Apartments). Daily 9 AM–5:30 PM.

★★★ Museumsquartier (MQ)

One of the largest cultural complexes in the world, housed in the former imperial stables. On 60,000 m², the Leopold Museum (world's largest Schiele collection, 16 €), the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art, 14 €), the Kunsthalle Wien, and dozens of small galleries, cafés, and design shops come together. In summer, thousands populate the colorful "Enzis" (seating furniture) in the courtyard — Vienna's most relaxed meeting place.

Museumsplatz 1. MQ grounds free. Museums: 14–16 € individually, MQ combo ticket 35 €. Most museums: Mon closed.

★★ Albertina

One of the most important graphic collections in the world: Dürer, Klimt, Schiele, Monet, Picasso. The permanent exhibition "Monet to Picasso" alone is worth the visit. In addition, there are changing blockbuster exhibitions. The building itself — a palace at the southern tip of the Hofburg — offers a fantastic view over the Burggarten from the bastion.

Albertinaplatz 1. 18.90 €. Daily 10 AM–6 PM, Wed & Fri until 9 PM.

💡 Tipp

The MQ is Vienna's best value-for-money district: See the Schiele collection at the Leopold Museum, then contemporary art at MUMOK, followed by a spritzer on an Enzi in the courtyard — a perfect half-day for under 40 €.
